Join Carol "Krill" Carson to learn about ocean sunfish strandings along the shores of Cape Cod each fall and early winter. Ocean sunfish are the heaviest bony fish that migrates into our waters to feed on jellyfish and other gelatinous critters. In the fall, these gentle giants must head south to warmer wintering areas if they are to survive. As they head south, some individuals become trapped in Cape Cod Bay due to the hook-like nature of the Cape itself. Since 2005, strandings of ocean sunfish have increased dramatically with the majority of strandings occurring in Wellfleet Harbor, due to the geographic and bathymetric features of the harbor and surrounding areas. Warming waters of the Gulf of Maine, including Cape Cod Bay, are shifting the range of the ocean sunfish by providing a rich and productive feeding area off Cape Cod. More ocean sunfish off Cape Cod each summer results in higher numbers of stranded animals each fall, and those numbers are rising.
